Background
National Ski Team Background:
One of Canada’s top young prospects in Nordic skiing, Tom has been rapidly developing through the Canadian system and has been part of two historic seasons on the National Ski Team. Tom was part of Canada’s first-ever medal-winning relay team at the World Junior Championships who won the silver in Oberwiesenthal, Germany in 2020. He backed that up performance with three, top-12 finishes at the 2021 World Juniors in Finland including a fifth-place finish in the 30-kilometre mass start race.
Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing:
Growing up in Calgary’s foothills, Tom started skiing as a Bunny Rabbit with Foothills Nordic before graduating to the Jack Rabbit program. It was when he advanced to the Track Attack program when he had Chris Jefferies and Rhonda Jewett as lead coaches. Tom became the longest member (seven years) of the Track Attack program with before taking additional steps towards the national program where he is now, training underneath Eric Groveneveld, Jess Cockney and Robin McKeever.
Tom simply loves being on snow – be it cross-country skiing, downhill or ski mountaineering. Tom was born for the snow – when he was younger, he would define his age as XX winters old.
He has taken this passion to pursue an Olympic dream on snow. His goal is to finish in the top-10 at the World Championships and eventually the Olympics.
Personal:
Tom started his career on snow on the front lawn and at Bowmont Park when he was two, chasing his siblings around on downhill skis even when there wasn’t much snow around. Tom learned to love downhill skiing in Fernie, B.C. with his three sisters. He started cross-country ski racing at the Cookie Race in Kananaskis when he was five. He began ski mountaineering at 13, but his true passion is cross country where he loves training, racing and socializing with his teammates.
Tom’s deep passion for playing in Calgary’s foothills continues in the summer months as well – he loves to ride his bike and enjoys dropping a line in the water fly fishing on the Bow River. He likes cooking and trying new things. Tom tours around Canada racing with his two sisters and three cousins. He is currently balancing engineering studies at the University of Calgary while chasing his Olympic dream.
