Caroline Beauchamp and Alex Maycock to carry the Maple Leaf at Lake Placid 2023 Opening Ceremony

Alpine skier Caroline Beauchamp (University of Montréal) and cross-country skier Alex Maycock (Nipissing University) have been named Canada’s flag bearers at the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games, taking place in Lake Placid, NY.

Beauchamp, 22, is captain of the Montréal Carabis women’s team. She has just achieved her best FIS performances on the slopes of Mont Tremblant, where she successively finished first and third on her first giant slalom runs.

A medical student, she appears on the academic honour roll with an average above 3.5. Always smiling and very humble in her academic and sporting successes, she is recognized for her leadership among her peers. She also does a lot of volunteer work in hospitals.

“I feel very honoured and privileged,” said Beauchamp. “It is a great pleasure for me to lead the delegation. This nomination embodies all the efforts I have put into skiing over the years. I hope to represent my country and other Canadian athletes well.”

“She’s a good person, always smiling, she’s a good leader,” said former Montreal Carabins head coach and Canadian team coach in Lake Placid, Michel Huot. “To appear on the academic honour roll, it takes a very organized person. I am very proud of her.”

Alexander Maycock, 23, was part of the Canadian team at the 2019 FISU World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

A top student-athlete deeply involved in pursuing and supporting his peers at the national level with Nordiq Canada, Alex has taken a leadership role within the team by guiding and mentoring new members and supporting their development.

As a kinesiology student from Nipissing University, Alex will be leading two other athletes from the same school at these Games. He continues to propel student sport at his university and ensures the sustainability of cross-country skiing in Nipissing.

Owner of Maycock Performance Coach, he prepares specialized training programs for other cross-country skiers in the community. He also shares his passion through technical and tactical advice via his YouTube channel.

“It’s a huge honour and a privilege to carry the flag for Canada, not only for me but also for Nipissing University and for North Bay,” said Maycock. “Having the experience of these Games in 2019, it was really eye-opening to realize the scale and the magnitude of this event.”

“Alex is a super diligent student, very earnest, who manages and balances his studies and his athletics”, said Nipissing Lakers Nordic skiing head coach Toivo Koivukoski. “He is also a great teammate who always supports and encourages his peers. He takes his skiing really seriously, but he’s also having fun at it. He’s a proud Canadian and he is the kind of gentleman that we would want to put forward as the best of who we are as Canadians.”

The Opening Ceremony of the FISU Games will take place on Thursday, January 12 at 7 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) at the Herb Brooks Arena of the Lake Placid Olympic Center. It will be broadcast live on TSN.ca and on the TSN app.
