FISU Submission Expression of Interest and Documentation

The 32nd Winter World University Games will take place in Torino, Italy from Jan 13th – Jan 23rd, 2025.  For the first time – the FISU World University Games will include Para nordic athletes.

Nordiq Canada is excited to send a team to compete in Italy. Para nordic athletes will be required to be Internationally Classified in one of the recognized FIS ICR (International Competition Rules) Sport Classes.

 

 

For those interested in competing, please read the following information and instructions carefully.

 

 

Selection Criteria Highlights

Final Selection Criteria will be published by end of September.

 

Selection Events:

  • Sovereign Lake (Dec 6-8th)
  • Eastern Canada Cup (Dec 13-15th)
  • Para Nordic COC (Nov 19-21st)

 

Selection Olympic Athletes:

  • Top 3 males on the Eastern Canada Cup FISU ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.
  • Top 3 females on the Eastern Canada Cup FISU ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.
  • Top 3 males on the Western Canada Cup FISU ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.
  • Top 3 females on the Western Canada Cup FISU ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.

Selection Paralympic Athletes:

  • Top 3 males at the Para Nordic COC (November Canmore) ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.
  • Top 3 females at the Para Nordic COC (November Canmore) ranking list counting best 2 of 2 races.

 

FISU Events

Cross-Country Events:

  • 5 KM Classic Sprint
  • 10 KM Free Interval Start
  • 20 KM Classic Mass Start
  • 4 x 7.5 KM Relay (Classic, Classic, Free, Free)

Para Nordic Events:

  • 5 KM Classic Sprint
  • 10 KM Free Interval Start

 

Due to tight deadlines between selection events and the submission of FINAL ENTRIES, athletes interested in competing in the FISU 2025 World University Games MUST follow and complete the instructions below by October 4th, 2024. There will be NO exceptions.

 

 

Athletes Must Satisfy the Following Criteria to be Eligible to Participate

  1. Be a member in good standing of Nordiq Canada, as that term is understood in the Nordiq Canada Bylaws.
  2. Upon selection, read and abide by all Nordiq Canada Safe Sport requirements.
  3. Have a current and valid Nordiq Canada and Canadian issued FIS license.
  4. Have a Canadian Passport, which must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the date of travel.
  5. Be at least 18 and less than 25 years of age on December 31st, 2025. Athletes must be born between January 1st, 2000, and December 31st, 2007.
  6. Be a student currently and officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate nation’s academic authority of Canada or a former student of the institutions mentioned who has obtained their academic degree in the year preceding the event.
  7. Comply with all relevant FISU requirements for eligibility as stated in the FISU Games Regulations found HERE.

 

Submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) and Documentation

Submit an expression of interest by 5:00 PM PSTon October 4th, 2024, through the

ZONE4 online registration.

    1. Expressions of interest received after the above-stated deadline will not be considered.
    2. Submission of an expression of interest, by the respective deadline, does not automatically guarantee selection to the FISU University Games.

 Nordiq Canada will share all required documentation with those who have completed the Expression of Interest in mid-October. These will need to be completed and returned prior to November 1st, 2024. Failure to provide these documents by November 1, 2024 will automatically render the athlete ineligible for selection.

Documentation

This will include:

  1. Academic Eligibility Forms
  2. Team Canada Online Form
  3. Team Agreement
  4. Medical Questionnaire
  5. Passport copy (jpg, max 1MB)
  6. Headshot (jpg, max 500KB)

 

 

Coaches

Coaches must adhere to the U Sports Coaching Certification Standards Policy as outlined below:

  • Full National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Competition Development Certification is required for all coaches representing Team Canada at the Summer and Winter University Games.
  • Exemptions from Competition-Development qualifications are possible in exceptional cases as determined by U Sports:
    • An exemption will be considered only if a coach has obtained Competition – Development In-Training status.
    • A coach may be granted a maximum of one exemption in his/her coaching career per sport.
    • An exemption may be granted on the premise that the coach plans to advance to full Level 3 or Competition-Development certification within two years.
    • Exemption requests must be officially submitted to U SPORTS at least 60 days prior to the start of the University Games.

 

Costs

All selected athletes are responsible for cost-sharing the expenses of the nominated coach(es) and wax technicians.

 

USPORTS has estimated the following expenses:

*Costs are approximate and will vary depending on the departure city, date of travel, exchange rate, visas, numbers attending etc. Costs are estimated based on the maximum number of days onsite.
** U Sports Participation Fee is subject to change

 

Athletes may be recognized and eligible for selection, however, they will only be registered upon the commitment to attend this self-funded event and upon submission of a deposit of $750 in advance of the event.
