National Health and Fitness Ski Day

Ottawa – On Wednesday February 26th over 100 skiers and supporters of National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD) joined together to ski with parliamentarians to share their love of cross-country skiing and demonstrate the potential for urban ski trails.

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health joined MPs/Olympians Adam Van Koeverden and Lyne Bissette who both used cross-country skiing as part of their Olympic training. Multiple Paralympic medalist, Senator Chantal Petitclerc participated on a sit-ski.

For the second year 40 high school students from Fort-Coulonge and Maniwaki skied from their school starting on February 22th to Ottawa. Students skied over 140 km in 4 days to celebrate active living in the winter and to show what can done with a Ski at School program. For most of the students this was their first winter trying cross–country skiing.

Skiing legend Senator Nancy Greene Raine started National Health and Fitness Ski Day in 2016 with support from Nordiq Canada and Nakkertok Ski Club. The event brings together Parliamentarians and the general public to ski in the city on a track, set by the groomers from SJAM Winter Trail.
